Unable to breathe properly or eat, the frightened dog ran around the neighborhood in distress.
Fortunately, observant locals noticed his struggle and reached out to The Last Stop Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Carleton, Michigan.
Teaming up with veteran rescuer Kim Broman Canales, the sanctuary launched an urgent mission to save him. Canales set up trail cameras around the neighborhood to catch a glimpse of Cheeto’s movements.
Despite their efforts, Cheeto managed to stay out of sight for days, sparking growing concern. With limited access to air, and deprived of food and water, his situation was dire.
“He couldn’t drink, he couldn’t eat, and the container was so tight he couldn’t breathe properly,” explained Tom Walsh, the founder of The Last Stop Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. “Our team spent three days tracking him day and night.”
Cheeto, terrified and constantly on the move, avoided capture and evaded several humane traps set to rescue him, as the container on his head impaired his sense of smell.
Rescuers worried that if they didn’t act quickly, local coyotes might find him first.
Finally, on the third day, there was a breakthrough. A local homeowner called Canales, having spotted Cheeto near their garage.
With permission, Canales approached cautiously and, with a deft hand, slipped a snappy snare over Cheeto’s head to finally secure him.
Once rescued, Cheeto was hurried to the shelter, where staff carefully removed the plastic container that had caused him so much distress.
Free at last, he was given food and water. He was frail, his ribs showing, and was taken to Woodhaven Animal Hospital for a thorough medical evaluation.
Despite this, Cheeto’s spirit remained resilient. Tom Walsh and his wife Sue took him under their wing, providing him with the care and comfort he needed. In return, Cheeto showed his gratitude with plenty of affectionate kisses.
Now, everyone at the shelter has become fond of the spirited dog, and Cheeto is reveling in the attention. Soon, he will be ready to start a new chapter in a permanent, loving home.
