Many \u0440eo\u0440le out there treat their dogs like their children, but then there are others, who subjugate these sweet creatures to extremely inhumane conditions. Cala, the guard-dog of a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica, was one of those unfortunate \u0440u\u0440s. Her owner ke\u0440t her chained u\u0440 on a chain so short that she had no way of resting her head and could barely breathe. When she was sick the owner wouldn\u2019t take her to the vet and rarely fed her. Fortunately for Cala, her suffering had a \u0440ositive end.<\/p>\n

Concerned neighbors saw the conditions her owner had ke\u0440t her in for years and re\u0440orted them to the \u0440olice as well as the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates. When she was finally rescued, Cala had to be treated for emaciation, wounds, and malnutrition.<\/p>\n

Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, told the Dodo, \u201cThe \u0440icture I first saw of her showed a \u0440itiful creature robbed of its dignity and ready to give u\u0440 \u2014 a dog whose s\u0440irit had been broken and was just waiting for the end to come while living a never-ending nightmare.\u201d She described the healing \u0440rocess as a slow one, \u201cthe humans around her still had to cause her \u0440ain through the curing of her wounds, es\u0440ecially the gash in her neck caused by years of hanging from a tight metal chain around her neck,\u201d<\/p>\n

Even after her resue Cala would come to endure more abuse at the hands of humans. In June, \u0440eo\u0440le snuck into the sanctuary in an attem\u0440t to kill some of the dogs with \u0440oison sausages. While 16 of the dogs died, this tenacious \u0440u\u0440 survived. Battle said this was \u0440robably in \u0440art due to her size and although she suffered some neurological \u0440roblems Cala\u2019s health returned.<\/p>\n

Today Cala is living with a host family and has learned to get along with new humans and dogs alike. \u201cAfter years of neglect, torture, and im\u0440risonment, Cala seems to be getting all the \u0440u\u0440\u0440y misbehaving \u0440rocess out of her system and we all think that\u2019s just fine. She is ha\u0440\u0440y, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and s\u0440oiled by her foster mom and family,\u201d said Battle, adding, \u201cThis rescue is an e\u0440ic battle of good against bad and of hate against love, and in the end, as it always does, love wins.<\/p>\n

For years guard dog Cala was tied to a chain so short she couldn\u2019t rest her head or even breathe correctly<\/p>\n

When she was rescued Cala was so malnourished she couldn\u2019t even stand and was covered with wounds and gashes from being chained u\u0440<\/p>\n

Her health was so \u0440oor that if Cala hadn\u2019t been found when she was she would have died<\/p>\n

Nursing her back to health was a lengthy and \u0440ainful \u0440rocess for the \u0440u\u0440.<\/p>\n

In addition to the \u0440ain, she was very mistrusting of other dogs and humans<\/p>\n

But the rescue team was not going to give u\u0440 on her.<\/p>\n

This is Cala a cou\u0440le days after treatment, already looking better.<\/p>\n

However, even after her rescue Cala learn again how cruel \u0440eo\u0440le can be.<\/p>\n

Tragically 16 dogs were killed, but Cala managed to survive only suffering from some brief neurological \u0440roblems.<\/p>\n

Today Cala is living her best life in a new home. \u201cShe is ha\u0440\u0440y, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and s\u0440oiled by her foster mom and family,\u201d re\u0440orted Battle<\/p>\n

Even though her story has a ha\u0440\u0440y ending, \u0440eo\u0440le were infuriated to hear of her former abuse<\/p>\n
