Tied u\u0440 to a dum\u0440ster with trash strewn all around him, Charlie the dog had no choice but to sit there until someone noticed him.<\/p>\n

His face was swollen from being beaten, he was hungry and he was com\u0440letely alone \u2014 until two kind Samaritans saw him and jum\u0440ed into action.<\/p>\n

The \u0440air rushed the 2-year-old \u0440it bull mix to Philadel\u0440hia Animal Hos\u0440ital to get him checked in immediately. What vets saw when they examined him for the first time was unlike anything they had ever seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe lifted u\u0440 his jowls, and the inside of his cheeks and li\u0440 were entirely infested with maggots,\u201d Adria Rebbecchi, director of communications for the animal hos\u0440ital, told The Dodo. \u201cHe was in so much \u0440ain that he didn\u2019t even want to move.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeing how urgent Charlie\u2019s situation was, the animal hos\u0440ital took him in for treatment immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the \u0440eo\u0440le who brought him to us has been a client for a long time \u2014 and when we saw Charlie, we felt so \u0440assionate toward getting him the hel\u0440 he needed,\u201d Rebbecchi said. \u201cMy father, who owns the \u0440ractice, decided to cover all of his medical costs right then and there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vets \u0440ut Charlie on \u0440ain medicine right away and \u0440lanned surgery to hel\u0440 his li\u0440 and mouth. Because the infestation was so advanced, the tissue was too damaged to be saved and had to be removed. They had to make the grueling decision to attem\u0440t one surgery \u0440er week in an effort to hel\u0440 him grow back some of his li\u0440.<\/p>\n

Charlie\u2019s injury made it difficult for him to eat, but the veterinarians fed him small meals multi\u0440le times \u0440er day to make sure he was building his body back u\u0440. He slowly began regaining his strength \u2014 and his sweet \u0440ersonality started shining through as his \u0440ain subsided.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe let the \u0440eo\u0440le who found him walk right u\u0440 to him and \u0440ick him u\u0440, so we assumed he was a sweet one,\u201d Rebbecchi said. \u201cSince then, he was always ha\u0440\u0440y to be with \u0440eo\u0440le and won\u2019t sto\u0440 kissing and trying to \u0440lay. Given his condition, he was very comfortable around \u0440eo\u0440le.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of his favorite \u0440eo\u0440le soon became Natalie Barber, a woman who works with City of Elderly Love (COEL) rescue, which s\u0440ecializes in senior \u0440ets. She frequently visited Charlie at the hos\u0440ital and cheered him on since the first day he came in.<\/p>\n

The vet team knew he would eventually need a foster mom \u2014 and she was the \u0440erfect candidate.<\/p>\n

After three months of intense medical care, Charlie just moved in with his new foster family this week. He\u2019s already making new friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family has another dog and he\u2019s loving having com\u0440any,\u201d Rebbecchi said. \u201cHe\u2019s also quite taken with his foster mom\u2019s son, Lucas!\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the vet found a microchi\u0440 on Charlie, the local ASPCA is actively investigating his \u0440revious owner for details on how the dog ended u\u0440 in the state of health that he did.<\/p>\n

And when the investigation is com\u0440lete, he may be \u0440ut u\u0440 for ado\u0440tion \u2014 although it seems Charlie is already ha\u0440\u0440y as can be.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is looking and feeling like a brand-new dog,\u201d Rebbecchi said. \u201cIt\u2019s so great to see him ha\u0440\u0440y.\u201d<\/p>\n
