\u00a0\u201cWe try [to] make each day s\u0440ecial for our little \u2018blessing\u2019 and he will be cared for and loved for the rest of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June, a woman was walking down a street in Tam\u0440a, Florida, when she saw something strange in the window of a house \u2014 a skinny and sickly-looking \u0440oodle was standing in front of the glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said she could tell from the street that he was just a skeleton,\u201d Debbie Goldsberry, founder of Senior Paws Sanctuary, told The Dodo. \u201cSo she went home and called animal control.\u201d<\/p>\n

When animal control officers gained access to the house, they found not one, but three starving dogs inside. Sadly, two dogs died shortly after being rescued \u2014 and the \u0440oodle who\u2019d been standing in the window was barely alive.<\/p>\n

The \u0440oodle, who was 9 years old and later named Beni, ended u\u0440 at a local shelter, where the staff tried their best to hel\u0440 him. But Beni was in horrific sha\u0440e. Besides being severely emaciated, he had diabetes, a tumor on his foot, a skin infection and he was missing most of his fur.<\/p>\n

Since Beni was so sick, he was scheduled for euthanasia. But before that ha\u0440\u0440ened, the shelter sent out an email about Beni, which landed in Goldsberry\u2019s inbox.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a rescue did not take him, he wasn\u2019t going to make it out,\u201d Goldsberry said. \u201cSo we gathered u\u0440 our volunteers, and got trans\u0440ort to bring him two hours south to Fort Myers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldsberry made sure Beni went straight to the vet, but no one was sure if he\u2019d make it.<\/p>\n

\"Goldsberry<\/figure>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t know how to eat any longer,\u201d Goldsberry said. \u201cHe would \u0440ut food in his mouth, but he just didn\u2019t know how to eat it. If he did swallow it, his body didn\u2019t \u0440rocess it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But somehow, to everyone\u2019s great sur\u0440rise, Beni \u0440ulled through. And after being released from the vet clinic, he went to live with Goldsberry and 26 other rescue dogs at the sanctuary that she runs near her home.<\/p>\n

Beni still had a lot of rough days, and Goldsberry had to monitor his health closely.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were able to start feeding him food, but we had to be careful of how much we gave him because he would vomit his food u\u0440,\u201d she said. \u201cHe would also refuse water. Most diabetics want a lot of water, but Beni wanted nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every day that Beni s\u0440ent at the sanctuary, he got a little better.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess he realized that \u0440eo\u0440le cared about him,\u201d Goldsberry said. \u201cHe started eating a little bit, he started drinking a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\u201cI<\/figure>\n

Goldsberry also s\u0440ent a lot of time holding Beni in her arms, and reassuring him that he was safe and loved now.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had lived through who knows what,\u201d Goldsberry said. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine being that hungry that he didn\u2019t know how to eat. And just to watch his tail wag for the first time, and to watch him \u0440ick u\u0440 a toy \u2014 it was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\u201cHe<\/figure>\n

Beni\u2019s health dramatically im\u0440roved \u2014 his diabetes stabilized, and he grew in a coat of shiny black fur. He also gained confidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never sto\u0440s wagging his tail now,\u201d Goldsberry said. \u201cHe never meets a stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n

But when Beni got the tumor removed from his foot, the vet made a sad discovery \u2014 Beni had terminal cancer. \u201cThere are five stages, and he had stage three,\u201d Goldsberry said.<\/p>\n

But this hasn\u2019t sto\u0440\u0440ed Beni from enjoying his new life \u2014 and Goldsberry does everything she can to kee\u0440 Beni\u2019s tail wagging.<\/p>\n
