Upon reaching him, our rescue team recognized the immediate need for comfort, unaware that a difficult journey lay ahead. Initial medical evaluations revealed a grim diagnosis: a growing mass that had likely led to his abandonment. With options ranging from risky surgery to conservative care, we faced a heartbreaking decision.

Determined not to give up, we chose to explore every possible treatment. Little Hippo responded briefly to specialized therapies that stabilized his condition and rekindled his spirit. His appetite returned, and glimpses of his friendly personality emerged from the shadows of pain.
However, as time went on, the toll of aggressive treatments became evident. Little Hippo’s joy began to fade, overshadowed by the physical distress caused by constant medical interventions. We realized that what he truly needed was a loving home rather than sterile clinics.
After careful consideration, we brought Little Hippo to our sanctuary, transforming it into a refuge filled with love and care. For the first time, he experienced the warmth of a real home, complete with soft beds, treats, and gentle walks in the sun. Our volunteers indulged him with favorite foods, ensuring his days were filled with affection and comfort.
Despite the progression of his illness, Little Hippo remained joyful, wagging his tail and making friends among the other dogs at the shelter. He was placed on a palliative care routine, receiving medication solely to keep him comfortable and pain-free.
Little Hippo thrived in this nurturing environment, embodying what it meant to be part of a loving pack. Unfortunately, by winter, we noticed changes in his mobility, and we knew his time with us was limited. His steps became unsteady, and we vigilantly stayed by his side, fulfilling our promise to provide love until the end.
In February 2024, after six cherished months together, Little Hippo passed away peacefully in his sleep, free from the burdens that had once plagued him. He left this world not as a stray, but as a deeply loved companion, having experienced warmth and kindness in his final days.
Reflecting on our time with him, we acknowledge that while we could not change his fate, being part of his life during those precious months was a profound honor.
